Questions people ask before they write to me
About me
Who is Venkatarangan Thirumalai?
I am a technology entrepreneur, keynote speaker and author based in Chennai, India, with more than thirty years in software. I founded Vishwak Solutions, which ran operations and technology for Microsoft Network (MSN) for more than a decade, and later co-founded docu3C, a fintech venture built on Azure AI. Today, through The Founder Catalyst, I speak to business leaders about what Generative AI means for their business, and I advise founders on the move from founder to CEO.
What is The Founder Catalyst?
The Founder Catalyst is my practice for keynotes and founder advisory, run through Little Feet Services Pvt. Ltd. in Chennai. It is also the title of my 2025 book, a practical field guide to the founder-to-CEO journey.
Are you tied to Microsoft, or to any AI vendor?
No. Microsoft Regional Director is an honorary title. It is not a job, and it is unpaid. I am not a Microsoft employee, and nothing I say or write is an official view of Microsoft. I also don’t earn commissions or referral fees from any AI or software vendor. When I recommend a tool, or suggest you leave one alone, it is because I think that is right for your business.
Do you use AI to prepare your talks?
Yes, very much. I have built my own “second brain”: an AI-searchable library of decades of my talks, blog posts and writing. I use it to find ideas I have written about before, to structure material, and to get feedback on my rehearsals. But I set the outline, I review every line, and I stand behind every word I say. AI is my coach, not my ghostwriter. When you invite me, you get me, not ChatGPT or Claude.
I learnt this the hard way, and wrote about it here: ChatGPT messed up the script of my AI talk!
Keynotes and talks
What the talks cover
Do you teach AI tools?
No. My talks and sessions are about what AI means for your business: strategy, value, risk, people and decisions. Where a team wants to go deeper, I run deep dives and short programmes that are hands-on, but they are always about business choices, not tool training.
Who are your talks for?
CEOs, CXOs, founders, senior leadership teams, industry associations, and conference and corporate audiences. That is where I can be most useful, so that is where I focus most of my time.
How long is a keynote?
Usually 30 to 60 minutes, including questions. Fireside chats work well too. For panels, I find the conversation is most useful when it is focused, has two or three panellists, and we have spoken beforehand to prepare, so I tend to say yes to those.
Can you tailor the talk to our company or industry?
Yes. That is how every talk is built. Even before we agree, I want to understand your audience: who they are, what they already know about AI, what is changing in your business or industry right now, and what you want them to leave with. Based on that, I’ll tell you honestly whether I am the right speaker, and how I would shape the talk. Once we agree, I bring in examples from your industry, and where it helps, from your own company, so the talk feels like it was written for your room. Because it was.
What do you need to know before the talk?
To see whether I am the right fit and to tailor the talk, please share:
- the objective of the event, and what you want the audience to leave with
- a short brief on the organisers
- the number of participants, and their typical profile (roles, seniority, industry)
- the length of the talk
- who the other speakers are
- whether it is online or in person, and the city and venue
- the planned date
It also helps to watch one or two of my earlier talks on my YouTube channel, so you can judge whether my style suits your audience.
Languages, online and hybrid
Do you speak in Tamil?
Yes. I speak in English or Tamil, or a mix, whichever suits your audience.
Can you speak in Hindi or other languages?
Not today. I speak in English or Tamil. With AI translation and voice tools improving quickly, that may change, and I look forward to it.
Do you speak online?
Yes. I speak both online and in person. In person, I have spoken in 26 cities across 11 countries.
Do you do hybrid events?
We can discuss it. I prefer one or the other, fully in person or fully online, because each works better when it is designed for one kind of audience. When the audience is split, it is harder to keep both halves engaged.
Workshops, deep dives and programmes
What’s on offer
Do you run workshops or longer sessions?
Yes. Beyond keynotes, I run a few focused formats: a working session the same afternoon as a keynote; a leadership deep dive over one or two half-days; a four-week online sprint of one hour a week; a closed-door briefing for boards; founder circles; and a five-week cohort built on my book. Each has a fixed scope and ends with something your team keeps.
How is a deep dive different from a training programme?
Training teaches people how to use tools. A deep dive helps your leaders make decisions. We work on your business, your numbers and your people, and we finish with a written plan: what to build, what to buy, what to leave alone, and what to do in the next 90 days.
What will our team take away?
Every format ends with something concrete. Depending on the format, that is a shortlist of AI opportunities worth piloting, a one-page AI decision memo, a 90-day plan, a board briefing note, or a personal founder-to-CEO plan.
Choosing a format
Can the keynote and a working session happen on the same day?
Yes, and it’s often the best use of the day. The keynote sets the scene for everyone. That afternoon, a smaller group of up to 20 leaders stays back to decide what to act on.
Can you do more than one session in a day?
Yes. A keynote followed by a leadership session works well. Please allow at least an hour between them.
Can you work with our team over a few weeks instead of one day?
Yes. The four-week AI leadership sprint is one hour a week, online, for up to 15 leaders, with a small task between sessions. It suits teams spread across cities, and leaders who can’t give up a full day. Change tends to stick better this way than after a single session.
Do you brief boards?
Yes. A closed-door 60–90 minutes for your board or top team, usually before a big AI decision or your annual plan. It is confidential, and it ends with a short note on the questions your board should keep asking.
Do you run sessions for groups of founders?
Yes. A founder circle brings together six to ten founders or CEOs, in one room for two to three hours, for an open conversation on AI and growing their companies. Founder networks, industry groups, or a founder who brings their peers together can host one.
Is there a programme based on your book?
Yes. The Founder Catalyst cohort works through the book over five weekly 90-minute sessions for up to 12 people, one part of the book each week, with copies of the book included, and ends with each founder’s own founder-to-CEO plan. It suits founders at a similar stage, incubator cohorts, or a founder with their leadership team.
Can these be done online?
The sprint is online by design. The cohort and board briefing work well online or in person. The deep dive, the founder circle and the keynote working session work best in the same room.
How are these priced?
Per programme, not per hour, so you know the full cost up front. Tell me about your team and I’ll send a short proposal with the scope, the dates and the fee.
Planning your event
Booking, fees and invoicing
How far ahead should we book?
Four to six weeks is comfortable. I can sometimes do less.
How do we confirm the booking?
A date is held once we agree on the brief, and confirmed with an advance of 50%. The balance is due within 7 days of the event.
What are your fees?
They depend on the format, the length and the location. Tell me about your event and I will come back with a clear quote.
What if the event is postponed or cancelled?
One reschedule is fine with reasonable notice, which is normally 14 days or more. If an event is cancelled, I will refund the advance, less any travel already booked.
Do you invoice with GST?
Yes. Invoices are raised by Little Feet Services Pvt. Ltd., an Indian company, with GST.
Can you invoice in US dollars, or to an overseas company?
Yes. I can invoice overseas organisations in US dollars, in line with the Indian tax rules that apply at the time.
Travel and on the day
Do you travel?
I am based in Chennai and travel within India and overseas. For events outside Chennai, the organiser covers travel and stay. I prefer to fly, with a hotel close to the venue.
What do you need from us on the day?
- A good projector or screen (16:9), with an HDMI connection for my laptop
- A hands-free microphone
- A stable internet connection, if we plan a live AI demonstration
- For public and external events: a professional video recording of my talk, plus photographs, which I can release on my website and social channels. For internal corporate events, we agree on recording beforehand.
The full list is in the speaker kit.
How do you handle questions from the audience?
I keep 10–15 minutes for questions, and hard ones are welcome. If there is more to discuss, I am happy to follow the talk with a short round table for a select group, or a focused session in your conference room.
Can we record the talk?
For public and external events, I ask that the talk be recorded professionally, and that I receive the video and photos to use on my own website and channels. You are welcome to use them to promote your event too. For internal corporate events, we agree on recording and use beforehand.
Will you share your slides?
In most cases, yes, and I am happy to. If you ask in advance, I can also prepare a handout or a downloadable version for participants.
Can we buy copies of your book for attendees?
Yes. The Founder Catalyst can be arranged in bulk for gifting, and I am happy to sign copies.
Will you promote the event?
Yes. Once the details are confirmed, I share it on LinkedIn and in my newsletter.
Invitations and other requests
Do you speak at colleges and non-profit events?
Occasionally, when the audience and purpose are a close fit with my work. As most of these involve a full day of travel for a short session, and my focus is on business leaders and founders, I am selective about the ones I take on. Please do write to me with the details.
Will you speak at our event for free, for the exposure?
I appreciate the thought. Speaking is a big part of my work, and each talk is prepared specifically for its audience, so I don’t usually speak for exposure alone. Tell me about your event and your budget, and let’s see what is possible.
Can we interview you for a podcast, an article, or a panel on your channel?
I’m happy to. Write to me with a little about your channel or publication, your audience and the topic, and let’s discuss.
Will you judge our startup competition or hackathon?
Hackathons are not a good fit for me, so I usually decline those. I do enjoy judging where my experience is useful, such as product design and business plan competitions, investor pitch panels, and innovation challenges inside companies. These are paid engagements. Tell me about yours.
Can you mentor me personally, or advise me on my career?
For early-stage founders, the best route is the TiE Chennai mentoring programme, which I am part of. My book, The Founder Catalyst, and my weekly writing are also good places to start. If you are the CEO of a funded startup, I work with a small number of founders as a paid, professional engagement.
Founder & CEO advisory
What I help with
What exactly do you help founders with?
The move from founder to CEO: strategy, product direction, pricing, senior hiring, building a leadership team, board readiness, acquisitions, and where AI fits in your business.
Is this coaching?
Not in the usual sense. I don’t bring a framework and a worksheet. I bring experience of having built and run a company, and I work on the real decisions in front of you.
Do you work with our leadership team, or only the founder?
Mainly with the founder or CEO. Where it helps, I also work with your CXOs and leadership team, and join leadership or board meetings.
Can you help us choose between AI vendors, or review a proposal?
Yes, I’m open to it. It needs to be agreed at the start as part of an advisory engagement or a deep dive, with a clear scope, rather than as a one-off review. You get an independent view: what to build, what to buy, and what to leave alone.
What is not included?
I don’t run execution for you: sales, marketing or hiring on your behalf. I also don’t sell for you, or promise to bring or refer business to you. I help you decide and lead; your team delivers.
Do you work with early-stage founders?
Yes, mainly through my mentoring work with TiE Chennai. My paid advisory work is usually with founders whose companies are already growing.
Do you work with companies outside India?
Yes, online, and in person when travel is agreed. For in-person work, South-East Asia and the Middle East are the easiest for me to reach from Chennai, though I’m happy to consider Africa, Australia, Europe and North America too.
How an engagement works
How does an engagement start?
With a free first conversation, over a video call, or over coffee if you are in one of Chennai’s business districts. If we agree to meet in another city, the cost of travel and stay is borne by you.
How does an engagement work?
If there is a fit, we work on a monthly retainer, with regular one-to-one sessions and access when something urgent comes up. Every quarter we review what has changed.
How long do engagements last?
Ideally three months to begin with, and then as long as I am adding value. Most founders find the value shows up after the second month.
How quickly do you respond between sessions?
I try to reply within one business day, and the same day for anything urgent. When I am travelling, which is not often, it can take a little longer.
How is the retainer billed?
Monthly, in advance.
Do you take equity instead of fees?
Advisory is paid in fees. Any equity is a separate conversation, and only for companies I choose to invest in.
What if we want to stop?
There is no lock-in. Either of us can end it with 15 days’ notice, and you pay only for the time up to the end of that notice. I do suggest giving it three months, because that is when the value usually shows.
Confidentiality and trust
Is it confidential?
Yes, completely. I’m happy to sign an NDA before we talk details.
Do you have a team?
The advisory work is with me, personally. That’s the point. Where a specific need comes up, I may bring in one of a small number of trusted partners or former colleagues, but only after you have explicitly agreed.
Can we speak to someone you have worked with?
Yes. I can introduce you to a past client, with their permission.
Do you also invest?
I invest as an angel in a small number of companies. Advisory and investment are separate conversations.
